Purchasing Hedgehogs From Us
- Our babies are almost always six to eight weeks old when they go to their new homes.
- We do everything possible to produce quality animals and we work very hard to produce wonderful pets.
- We use quality food, caging, and bedding as well as use our human resources to provide quality care.
- Our diverse bloodlines come from across the country and we keep detailed records of our animals that can be traced back many generations.
- We visually inspect every animal and we give you every opportunity to inspect your new pet as well.
Pictures of Babies
- We ship very few animals so most of our babies are sold directly to individuals. We prefer our customers to handle several babies and to choose the baby that they like the best.
- Our inventory changes quite frequently so keeping an accurate inventory and track of each animal would be nearly impossible.
- We have a variety of pictures of our animals on our website. Some are pictures that we have taken, others are pictures from our customers and some were done by a professional photographer.
- We DO offer pictures of our breeding stock babies. If you have a specific color request or fall in love with one of the babies listed individually you are more than welcome to put down a deposit on one of those babies.
Color Requests

- I personally enjoy having a variety of colors in my herd and it has been challenging and fun for me to produce the various colors.
- I do not however, enjoy trying to determine the true name of each color and trying to describe that color to others. Hedgehog Central at www.hedgehogcentral.com has an amazing color guide with descriptions if color is an interest to you.
- I am happy to accommodate broad requests such as standard or normal (shades of brown), something other than standard or something exclusive such as not albino. As mentioned in the picture section I prefer to have our customers choose their baby after handling rather than by reserving or selecting babies on specific requests.
- Other breeders specialize in colors, are good at identifying the colors, and taking pictures of those babies. I suggest trying one of the other breeders if you are interested in a particular color. Breeder listings are available on several sites including www.hedgehogcentral.com and www.hedgehogworld.com.
- We almost always have both standard and fancy babies available. We hope that you will anticipate the surprise of the exact availability when you come.

Setting up the Cage
- When your hedgehog gets home you will want to let it acclimate to its new cage.
- Make sure it is warm, comfortable, and able to find its food dish and water bottle. The water level should be placed so that the tip of the bottle is the hedgehog's shoulder height.
- Please allow your hedgehog time to rest after the ride home. It may take awhile for it to adjust to its new surroundings or it may be relaxed and ready to play right away.
- We suggest that you wait to put the wheel until after the second or third day home. Your hedgehog should be eating and eliminating regularly before you introduces additional stimulation to the cage.
- Some hedgies are more interested in wheeling than eating or they wheel so much that they are too tired to eat after all their activity. A good comparison is my children at the park – they play and play and don't want to stop and eat, then fall asleep in the car on the way home without getting a full meal.
Introducing Other Pets
- It is always a good idea to quarantine any new animals from other animals in your home for two weeks. We understand that it isn't always possible but it will help minimize the stress of the new animal and decrease the risk of an illness or disease among pets.
- What is normal bacterial flora for one species of animals may be harmful for other species. This is especially true for bacteria between birds or reptiles, and mammals.
Behavior Changes
-
It is not uncommon for new pet owners to notice a change in behavior from the time when they purchased their hedgehog and the time they took their new pet home.
- The friendly outgoing hedgie that crawled all over you and cuddled in your shirt is now a shy ball of prickles. There are a few reasons why you may see a change and some things you can do to help you and your hedgie relax.
- Changes in environment are stressful for most animals and each animal will respond to the stress differently.
- Some hedgehogs will check out their new cage and home immediately. Others will revert to their shy and nature and will be inclined to protect themselves from the unknown.
- Your hedgie may be thinking "Where am I? I don't know this place, this person so I should hide from this scary new situation". My best description compared to children (or adults!) that are at home singing super stars and will sing like they are going to be the next American Idol. Get them out in public and they are shy, nervous and lacking the confidence they had in their own living room. It isn't that they can't sing it is that they are afraid to let it out. Your hedgie is the same way, it isn't that it isn't suddenly a totally different animal but you will need to help it relax and become comfortable with you.
- Most new owners are a little nervous around their new pet and the hedgehogs can pick up on their nervousness.
- Handling hedgehogs takes time, patience, and practice. We do our best to give our customers training, practice, and encouragement during the selection process.
- Many new owners are more nervous and unsure about handling their new pet when they are at home on their own. Hedgehogs can pick up on that nervousness and may think "Gee, they're nervous about something, I should be nervous about something. I'd better protect myself from what is about to happen".
- You may be afraid of their prickles but they are afraid of YOU.
- It takes practice to be an experienced hedgie handler. Unfortunately some of our handling inadequacies can make nervous hedgies even more nervous.
- With patience, time and remembering the basic handling principals you and your hedgies can overcome prickly beginnings.
- However, if you don't handle your hedgehog the way it wants to be handled it won't respond to you the way you want it to respond.
- Vacations or other periods of time without handling can contribute to a set back in the bonding process.
- Hedgehogs will also become more shy and nervous over time if they are not handled regularly.
- According to Lori Keller, hedgehog rescue coordinator, rescue hedgies are generally intractable and grouchy as a result of not being handled regularly or properly. When handled properly and consistently many grouchy hedgehogs can be rehabbed into wonderful pets.

- The hedgehog.
- Food. The minimum food that we suggest purchasing with your hedgehog is currently $12.00. This food should be enough to last two months if not longer. Refer to our Diet Recommendations guide for reasons why we feel keeping the hedgehog on the same diet for at least the first month is important. Should you decide not to purchase the food we will have you sign a waiver stating that you acknowledge and are accepting the risks associated with not following our suggestions.
- Cages and/or supplies. We have worked very hard to have quality products available at affordable prices. These products are arranged in our Hedgehog Shopping Guide. Our package deals offer the best values but each item can be purchased individually.
- Tax. We are a real business and pay real taxes. Taxes vary according to when and where you purchase your hedgehog.
- We certainly appreciate your business. The prices listed online are the cash discounted prices because you save us money by not using a credit card.
- We also offer an additional $10 cage package discount (when paying for both in cash) off the price of the animal. We appreciate you supporting us by buying your supplies from us.
Terms of Payment
- Your $10 deposit made on line is deducted from your final price and is considered "cash" for your discount.
- We prefer cash payment but we can accept VISA/MC. Note: the prices listed online are discounted $5 for cash so the cage package and animal price is $5 more when using VISA/MC.
- We are sorry, but we cannot accept personal checks.
- We do not offer payment plans or full payment via paypal.

How to Prepare For Your Hedgehog Purchase
The most important thing you can do before your hedgehog purchase is to research these unusual pets, to be certain hedgehogs are right for you.
*We suggest printing and reading the hedgehog articles found on our website. The nutrition articles are extremely important in understanding your pet’s needs and are one section you won’t want to miss. Reading and reviewing our online information will better prepare you for your hedgie adventure. Keep in mind that other websites and breeders may offer different advice than we recommend at Millermeade Farms. We suggest you follow our advice until you have more experience and can determine what is best for you and your pet.
*Prepare financially for your purchase. When you commit to purchasing a hedgehog you will not only need to prepare for the price of your pet but also for the cage and supplies you will need to provide it a good home. We strongly recommend purchasing our food with your hedgehog. Many animals do not deal well with changing their diets. Some animals won’t eat and others have intestinal upset.
*Bring extra cash for unexpected purchases to receive the cash discount. We sell a full line of hedgehog items. We certainly appreciate your business and we will be happy to direct you to the correct products for your pet. All of our products have been tried and tested and are our favorite option for each need. Many of our customers have found that the extra discount for purchasing a cage package from us make our great prices even better.
*Print and follow the directions on our website. Our address is very difficult for GPS and personal navigation devices to follow. Some customers have ended up in Ottowa, OH, which is 48 miles South of us. Other customers end up 1 mile east of us on County Road 15 instead of State Route 15.
*Bring a carrier or prepare to purchase a carrier. Your hedgehog will need to travel home in something. It can be as simple as a sturdy cardboard box with a sleeping bag or it can be one of our carriers that we have available for purchase.

- This first thing to do when scheduling an appointment is to figure out what will work best for you.
- We are a family-oriented business that strives to be flexible for our customers who are often traveling great distances. It is also important to us to set a schedule that enables Billie, my manager, and I t meet the needs of our families.
- Our normal business hours are Monday through Saturday 11 am to 1 pm. It is important to reserve your spot by making a deposit via our online deposit page.
- We will confirm your deposit via a reply email to let you know we have you on our schedule.
- Our Learning Center and Shop is at a different location than where we raise our animals. Most of our time is spent with the animals so please do not show up for a deposit without a confirmed appointment.
- It is important to try to be on time for your appointment. We schedule customers an hour apart for the benefit of everyone. However, we understand that delays happen and we will work with you when you arrive.
- You may have an appointment at the same time as another customer. We have found that customers seem to be a little more at ease and comfortable learning with someone else. We will have plenty of babies available and we have never had anyone fight over the same baby.

Pet and Breeding Stock Hedgehog Babies
Millermeade Farms has been selectively breeding our hedgehogs since early 1997. We believe that every animal we sell is a good example of a pet quality hedgehog. Each animal has been handled and observed for anything that might jeopardize its health in the future.
Millermeade Farms also firmly believes that not every pet hedgehog is a suitable breeding stock quality. Our breeding stock is carefully chosen based on:
- pedigree and background
- health of parents
- reproductive history of parents
- growth history of animal
- conformation of animal
- personality and temperament
We want to ensure that any hedgehog sold for breeding stock is an animal that we would select for our own herd.
Millermeade Farms has a different pricing structure for our pet and breeding stock hedgehogs. Our breeding stock animals are a higher price, which is typical in the animal industry. We offer many more services with our breeding stock animals, longer guarantees and breeder mentoring.
We are aware that it is possible to purchase a pet hedgehog with the intentions of breeding in order to purchase an animal at a cheaper price, however, the owner may not be using animals that meet the quality of breeding stock. This may result in less than optimum quality offspring and thus reflect on the reputation of the breeder and hedgehog industry. We value our integrity and we believe it is one of the most important elements of a successful business. We hope that all of our customers value respect and honor as much as we do.
We will be happy to discuss our breeding program with you at a later date should you want to explore the possibility of breeding your pet.

Price
We are lower in price than almost all hedgehog breeders online and most pet stores. Our pet price takes into consideration that our average customer drives three hours to come to the farm. Since our pet customers come to us instead of us shipping we are able to keep our overall cost lower.
Our breeding stock price allows for the extra time and effort that we put into breeding stock animals. As indicated above more information is included in the price and therefore more time and effort is required on our part.
Pet and breeding stock pricing is common practice in other animals as well.
Advance Pictures and Color Preference
We do not ship “pets” and therefore we encourage all of our pet customers to choose their pets based on their personality rather than select their pet from a picture. Our availability changes frequently and so it is difficult to keep a photo inventory current.
Many breeders are looking for specific colors to add to their breeding program therefore pictures are necessary to ensure they are getting what they want.
Color Preference refers to the fact that some people do not want a hedgehog with red eyes or they prefer the standard color. A “chocolate chip” would be a color preference but a request for a non-albino would not be a specific request.
Mixed Gender
We do not sell mixed genders to first time owners or for pets. First time owners requesting two animals can choose either two females or two males based on availability.
Shipping
We do not ship pet hedgehogs for the reasons mentioned in the pricing section.
Congenital Defects
Our standard guarantee is six months for anything congenital. We do our very best to produce healthy animals but on occasion an undetected birth defect may become life threatening. Should a pet hedgehog die from a congenital defect prior to the six-month purchase anniversary we will replace the hedgehog (excluding shipping) at no cost. After the six-month anniversary we typically make arrangements on an individual basis.
Breeding a female hedgehog is stressful on its body and additional stress may uncover an otherwise undetectable congenital defect.
Millermeade Farm Tracking
Hedgehogs we sell for breeding purposes are tracked within our breeding record keeping system. This valuable asset allows us to notify individuals with breeding animals from our herd if a problem should develop in our breeding lines. For instance, if a hedgehog dies of WHS we can notify identify offspring of the affected animal and notify owners of breeding stock from that line.
Tracking breeding stock is essential in all good breeding programs in order to breed for the healthiest animals possible.
Millermeade Farms supports the IHR and provides lineage information to those desiring to enter their breeding information into the IHR.
Production Potential Information
Millermeade Farms carefully selects our animal for our breeding program. When we are aware that an animal is being selected as a breeder we will help our customer identify animals that are ideal for a breeding program. Some of the things we look for when we choose our breeders we look for animals:
- That come from a mother who nurses her babies well without complications or baby growth delays.
- That come from a large litter and from a male who has a good production history.
- That have nice body confirmation and balance.
Reservation of a Specific Animal
As stated above we do not reserve pets based on color or bloodline because we want first time owners to select a pet based on its personality. However, for breeding programs breeders may look for specific colors, traits, or bloodlines for their program.
Breeder Mentoring Program
Over the past 25+ years of breeding animals I have fortunate to have worked with many mentors who shared their knowledge and experiences with me. One of my greatest joys is to share what I have learned with others who share a common love for animals. However, my time is limited and I choose to keep my faith and family my highest priorities. When my customers demonstrate a love for their animals, a desire and willingness to learn, as well as a similar value system as myself I am more than willing to mentor them in their own breeding adventure.
- All of our babies are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis unless they are reserved with a deposit. Deposits are accepted in the order in which they are received.
- Breeding stock babies are the only babies reserved specifically. Instead, when you put down a deposit for a pet baby you are reserving a spot to choose a baby. For example, if we have six babies available, we only accept deposits or schedule customers to look at four babies. That way, the fourth person to make an appointment still has a selection and isn’t stuck with the “left-over” and is still guaranteed the experience to handle several animals.
- We are able to have a nice rotation of babies by breeding on a regular basis. It is our experience that there is a delicate balance of supply and demand. We certainly don’t want to produce too many babies but at the same time we want to allow our customers to have a selection.
- Our highest demand typically corresponds with our lowest production. This happens for a couple of reasons.
- Our best production is during the summer months when most families are busy with vacations and summer activities.
- Our biggest demand is during the winter months when families are indoors. This corresponds to our lowest production time of year.
- Most of our babies are born in late spring through early summer when the demand is the lowest.
- We encourage deposits because it allows us to plan our family activities as well as to plan for other customers.

Millermeade Farms’ “Critter Connection” is a small home based business with a shop and learning center that is open by appointment. We’re not a large corporation with many employees and resources. My manager, Billie, and I have young children and husbands to whom we are devoted. We’ll do our best to work with you to the pets we proudly raise here on the farm into your hands in your home but keep in mind our time and resources are somewhat limited.
The prices of our animals are set based on picking them up here at our Farm/ Learning Center/ Shop or meeting us at one of the shows we attend.
We understand that it is sometimes necessary to ship and we have had to have animals shipped to us many, many times over the years. We do our best to accommodate the requests of our customers who need animals shipped but we must charge extra for our additional services.
In the past we were able to ship out of Toledo Express Airport. As of December 2009, Delta and Continental airlines use only commuter plans from Toledo Express and they cannot accommodate animal cargo. American Airlines cannot pre-book flights, which means animals may or may not be able to get on the desired flight and so our time and resources in preparation for that flight will have been wasted. Therefore, we will not ship on flights that cannot be pre-booked.
Our best and most frequently used method of shipping is Continental Airlines out of Detroit. Below is the information I used to establish our Crate and Delivery Charges:
Continental Airlines: Air Cargo
11701 Metro Airport Center Drive
Romulus, MI 48174-5413
I-80 E/I-90 E and I-75 N
110 mi - 1 hour 47 mins (provided no traffic tie ups)
- 2010 IRS mileage rate $.50 per mile = $110.00 round trip gas/wear and tear on our vehicle.
- $6 tolls I-80/I-90
- 4 hours road/travel time $15.00 per hour = $60 (large portion of this goes to babysitter)
- Travel Cage $10-$25 depending on type of crate required
- $8 travel bag per animal during winter months
- Time scheduling flight, packing animals, and airport paperwork $25 Food $5-15 depending on species
$200 minimum dollar amount of animals to be shipped.
Crate and Delivery Charges in Addition to Animal Charges and Airline Charges
- Animal Sales $200 - $299 = $200 Crate and Delivery Charge
- Animal Sales $300 - $499 = $150 Crate and Delivery Charge
- Animal Sales $500 - $749 = $100 Crate and Delivery Charge
- Animal Sales $750 - $999 = $75 Crate and Delivery Charge
- Animal Sales $1000+ = $50 Crate and Delivery Charge
Health Certificates $30 - $60
- Continental airlines animal cargo # is 1-800-575-3335. Please call and find out if there is a flight that works for you.
- We need to be at the airport 90 minutes prior to the flight and have an hour drive and need time to pack the animals. Flights can’t leave earlier than 10:00 am.
- Our last shipment out of Detroit via Continental Airlines was approximately $165.00.
Delivery to Your Home
Again, we prefer for our customers to come to our home. We can deliver to your home but we do have to charge accordingly for this service. Our delivery fee is $.55 per mile round trip and $10 per hour of the trip. This is NOT a cheap option.
Other Breeders and Dealers
We know there are other breeders and dealers who can offer a better shipping and/or delivery deal. We are blessed to have a large family and a business that has been successful since 1997. We value our customers but our top priority is our family and we must take steps to ensure that our most valuable resource – our time is used most effectively. Thank you for your time and understanding!

What Happens During Your Appointment
- When you come to Millermeade Farms you will have the opportunity to choose the hedgehog that is right for you.
- Traditionally, the first thing we will do when you come is that we will give you an orientation to the nature of hedgehogs and how their uniqueness is important in the way you handle your new pet.
- We do have a couch and a loveseat but be prepared to sit on the floor to handle the hedgehog babies. Baby hedgehogs are not afraid of falling and for the safety and comfort of both hedgehogs and humans we sit on the floor while playing with the babies.
- You will have the opportunity to handle several hedgehog babies. By handling different babies you will not only get to see several personalities but you will also have an opportunity to gain experience and comfort handling a prickly little pet.
- We will work with you and give you handling tips and instructions to help you feel confident and capable of handling your new pet.
- Preparing for your visit by reading our information guides will help us focus on your questions when you get here.
- Some of the topics we will discuss include but are not limited to:
- Hedgehog senses and how their senses play a part in the way they like to be handled
- How to pick up and hold your hedgehog
- How to understand hedgehog “language”
- Recognizing the time to pet and how to pet your hedgehog
- What hedgehogs eat in the wild and the correlation to captive hedgehog diets
- Not all foods are created equal
- Optimal temperatures
- Veterinary care requirements
- Cages, accessories, and bedding
- We do have a Purchase Notes Outline available here if you would like to print it to take notes when you come.
- Once you select your pet you will then be able to shop our full line of hedgehog supplies.
- We work hard at providing excellent products at great prices. We certainly appreciate your support by shopping with us.

What Millermeade Farms Has to Offer
Team Effort
- Millermeade Farms is a team effort of myself, Gail Dick, the support of my husband, my manager Billie, and the ladies who help me out on the weekends.
- It truly takes a team to provide quality care for the animals, accurate record keeping and committed customer service.
My five kids and busy household keep me hopping so my team helps me to stay on track
Billie does a great job helping customers since I can no longer be at every appointment personally.
Experience
- I am a professional breeder. I love and enjoy animals and I have chosen to make this my livelihood. Some hedgehog breeders are hobby breeders and simply breed for the love of their hobby. There are other breeders who breed only as a means to the end and do not enjoy the customer education or quality care aspect of their job. I have help from my husband and employees so that I can focus my time and attention on you the customer as well as my children.
- My knowledge and experience with both hedgehogs and sugar gliders has been gained through years as breeding experience as well as through formal education.
Unique Buying Experience at Our Learning Center
- Our customers have driven and flown from across the country for our unique buying experience. We will sit down together on the floor and play with and handle several animals.
- I firmly believe that hedgehog handling is best learned by experience and practice. It is not easily learn by reading, watching a video, or by verbal instruction. Certainly these options are valuable when shipping is the only option.
- A good comparison to handling hedgehogs is learning to knit. You first have to have the basic concept of how to hold the needles, where to put the thread and how to make a stitch. You can certainly read a book, watch a video, or have someone give you instructions over the phone but certainly you will learn more quickly and get better and faster results by watching someone and having someone guide you in person.
Information
- You will be given LOTS of information throughout the buying process.
- We have spent hours writing articles and developing this website and we won’t stop trying to make it better.
Our very own Hedgehog Handling Video has been shot and is COMING SOON

- We always do our best to answer questions both before and after the sale. Please be respectful of our time though and check out our site to make sure we haven’t already answered your question!
One Stop Shopping
- You will find quality, hard-to-find cages at a reasonable price at our spacious shop.
- We’ve searched high and low for quality hedgehog tested accessories and have done our best to bring them to you.
- The food we use available for purchase with your pet. This is the one item we insist on for the health and well-being for your hedgehog.
- We are budget-minded people and have put together package discounts for your best value
- We certainly appreciate your business when you choose to shop with us!
Yahoo Group
- We have a customer only Yahoo Group where our customers can share their pet updates, ask questions and network with other hedgehog owners.
- When we write new articles we will post them to the yahoo group for a peek-preview and input.

What to Except When You Meet Us at a Show
- Some of our customers choose to meet us at a show as a matter of convenience.
- Either Billie, our manager, or I will do our best to give you the time and attention you deserve. However, the very nature of the show does prevent us from giving you the same handling and buying experience you would receive at our home.
- Shows are great ways to meet us and see hedgehogs in person before you buy but we do recommend coming here for the best buying experience.
- Before planning to meet us at a show you will want to verify that we will be attending that particular show.
- Also, if you wish to purchase a cage package or specific accessories you will want to reserve those items as well. We have limited space available and it is not possible to take our full inventory line to the show.
